Reading Levels

Guided Reading Level Chart

First Grade materials and our Media Center Bookroom (teachers may borrow sets of books to use with small reading groups) are both set up using the Fountas and Pinnell system
of A-Z letters for Guided Reading Levels (GRL).
A child's INDEPENDENT READING LEVEL indicates that the child reads 95% or more of the words in a selection correctly and comprehends what is read.
You can use the chart below to see at which level your child is reading.

Book Leveling Instructions For Scholastic.Com's Book Wizard

Dear Parent,

Below are the directions for getting into the Book Wizard on the Scholastic website.

1. Go to www.scholastic.com

2. When you arrive at the site go to the “Teachers” tab, select “Teacher Book Wizard”.

3. When the book wizard comes up there will be a little box that says “Your Reading Level System” select the dot that says Guided Reading and then select the blue “set” button to set your reading system at Guided Reading.

4. Once your system is set at Guiding Reading go to the middle left side of the webpage and go to the Level Search section. Push the red go button. When the next page comes up, scroll down to the reading level section (the second search section). Go to the “any to any” boxes and select A in the first box and then select your child’s guided reading level in the second box.  For example, if your child’s reading level is D then select A in the first box and then select D in the second box” and press search. The Book Wizard should give you a list of book titles at your child’s guided reading level.

5. You can purchase these books or simply write down the titles and find them at the library.

Have fun listening to your child read to you!
